State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements

The issuance of the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia on State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements was stipulated by Article 83 item 3 of the Sports Act (Official Gazette, no. 71/06 and 150/08). The Decree on Criteria for Presenting State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements (Official Gazette, no. 40/07) stipulates criteria for presenting state awards for top-level sporting achievements, the cash amounts of these awards as well as the way they can be given.

State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements shall be awarded to athletes, sports teams, coaches and active expert sports workers (selector, sports doctor, and physical therapist), determined by the National Sports Federation, as recognition for:

  • winning gold, silver of bronze medals, or for winning the first second or third place in the Olympics, Paralympics, Deaf Olympics, and world and European senior championships in Olympic and Paralympic sports and disciplines and in Olympic sports and disciplines for the deaf
  • winning a gold medal, or for coming first at world and European senior championships in non-Olympic or non-Paralympic sports which have a long tradition in the Republic of Croatia (automobile racing, bocce, long-distance swimming, karate, kickboxing, bowling, motorcycling racing, orienteering, parachuting, mountain skiing, rugby and free climbing)
  • a sporting achievement of particular international value and importance.

In line with the criteria stipulated by the Decree, the Government of the Republic of Croatia has made a decision to present state awards for top-level sporting achievements at the proposal of the ministry competent for sport that collects proposals for the presentation of awards from national sports federations, the Croatian Paralympic Committee and the Croatian Deaf Sports Federation. The Government of the Republic of Croatia can also make a decision on awards and the value of awards in exceptional cases when the sporting achievement of an individual or a sports team is of particular international value and importance. Even in this case, the ministry competent for sport shall submit proposals to the Government of the Republic of Croatia to present awards, with the preliminary acquired opinion of the Croatian Olympic Committee, the Croatian Paralympic Committee or the Croatian Deaf Sports Federation. The presentation of such awards can be proposed by any sports club or national sports federation.

State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements shall be awarded in cash. The funds for the State Awards for Top-Level Sporting Achievements shall be provided from the budget of the Republic of Croatia.
